HIS Breast Cancer Awareness-Bringing Blue Into the Pink

Fifteen years ago, a brother and sister, Harvey I. Singer and Vicki Singer Wolf took their shared experience as breast cancer survivors and turned it into a mission that would change lives around the world. Together, they founded HIS Breast Cancer Awareness, a nonprofit dedicated to shining a light on a little-known fact: breast cancer does not only affect women, men can be diagnosed, too.

Breaking the Stigma Around Male Breast Cancer

When Harvey was diagnosed, he quickly realized that resources, education, and awareness for men with breast cancer were almost nonexistent. Alongside his sister Vicki, who also faced her own diagnosis, they began a journey to remove the stigma surrounding men with breast cancer. Their vision was simple but powerful: to let men know they are not alone and to ensure the world understands that breast cancer is not just a “women’s disease.”

Educating on Genetics and Risk

From the very beginning, HIS Breast Cancer Awareness has worked tirelessly to educate people about the role of genetic mutations, especially BRCA1 and BRCA2, in raising the risk of breast and other cancers. A critical part of their message is that mutations can be passed down from either parent, mother or father, to both sons and daughters. This knowledge empowers families to seek genetic testing, take preventive steps, and find cancers earlier when they are most treatable.

To help make lasting change, we must start with education for medical care providers. Male breast cancer education is missing from most medical curriculums and needs to be included. Teaching men how to perform self-breast exams and updating medical intake forms can also help normalize this diagnosis and reduce stigma.

15 Years of Impact and Collaboration

In the past decade and a half, Harvey and Vicki have connected with individuals, families, and organizations around the globe. Their work has included:

  • Collaborations with medical institutions, nonprofits, and advocacy groups.

  • Media outreach through interviews, podcasts, national television appearances, and a full-length documentary.

  • Publishing a book to share their story and spread awareness.

  • Attending medical conferences and supporting research trials to push forward progress in male breast cancer detection and care.

  • Advocating for changes in diagnostic screenings, treatment protocols, and patient support specifically tailored for men.

Through these efforts, HIS Breast Cancer has created a community where men know they have support, families understand their risks, and healthcare providers recognize the importance of including men in breast cancer education and care.

Looking Ahead: Our Continued Commitment

While we celebrate 15 years of accomplishments, our work is far from done. HIS Breast Cancer will continue to push for:

  • Earlier detection and awareness to help reduce the fatality rate of male breast cancer.

  • Better diagnostic screening tools and treatment plans for men.

  • Expanded education on hereditary cancers to empower future generations with knowledge and prevention.

  • Support systems for men so no one feels isolated after a diagnosis.

We remain committed to bringing blue into the pink, ensuring men are seen, heard, and supported in the fight against breast cancer.

A Heartfelt Thank You

None of this work would have been possible without the unwavering support of so many. We extend our gratitude to the organizations, businesses, medical professionals, volunteers, and individuals who have joined us on this journey. And most of all, we thank our family and loved ones who have stood by us through every challenge, change, and victory. A special thank you to the men who shared their breast cancer stories to educate and inspire others.

Your courage has helped drive change and save lives.

Together, we’ve proven that every voice matters. As we look to the future, we ask you to continue sharing our foundation because together, we can make a difference for male breast cancer and hereditary cancer awareness.

Here’s to 15 years of education, awareness, and hope, and to the many years of progress still ahead.
